PS3 suffers post launch bust in UK

Opinion and Analysis

The PlayStation 3 had a sales honeymoon for one week in the UK, now the hard slog begins.

According to Chart Track sales data reported to GamesIndustry.biz from 7000 retail outlets in the UK, Playstation 3 unit sales have had a marked downturn during the second post launch week.

To quote a Chart Track spokesman: "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent."

This is quite a turn around from the 165,000 record breaking unit sales during the launch week.  Those figures made it the fastest selling games console in the UK ever.  Perhaps it was due to a small confusion over a free 46” High Def Television giveaway to the first 100 purchasers.  The confusion being over the ‘first 100 purchasers’ point.

Still the UK sector of the PAL launch was such a huge peak for Sony that a correction had to be expected sooner than later.
