Review: Sonic and the Secret Rings - Wii race through the Arabian Night

Sonic makes his debut on the Nintendo Wii, and he brings all his blue-hedgehoggy speed to the platform in a hit-and-miss way.

Story wise, Sonic and the Secret Rings takes a quick side-step from a normal Sonic title, as the speedy hedgehog finds himself launched into the world of the Arabian Nights.  Being drawn into the literary world by the Genie Shahra in order to save the mythical world from the evil Erazor Djinn.

As such, Sonic must race around collecting rings in a variety of settings loosely based on chapters of the book that Sonic has been thrust into.  These environments are beautifully rendered by the Wii and provide a variety that is much needed as the more exasperating aspects of the game manifest.

Much will be written about the control mechanism employed in Sonic and the Secret Rings.  Of course this is (currently) a Wii exclusive, and as such employees the Wii-mote in horizontal mode to move Sonic around, and buttons 1 and 2 for breaks and jumping.  sonic image 1

The player has limited control over Sonics headlong speed, being able to move backwards or sideways to avoid obstacles by tilting the controller.  Jumping, homing in on an enemy and attacking by thrusting the controller forward are only really necessary to clear gulfs in the levels course.

There is also the "Soul Gauge" that can be depleted by using the Speed Break (to boost Sonic's forward speed) or Time Break (to give you more time to react to a situation)

There is also some variety on some levels allowing Sonic to grind skateboard style, or get catapulted to previously unreachable areas of the maps.

Sloppy control feeling and a linear track through the 3D world all hinder fun game-play.  The player is left to attempt the map level mostly by trial and error.  Although the map objectives vary with differing challenges thrown up, the result is usually the same.  Events happen so quickly, and without more direct control over Sonic, the player must memorise the obstacles and paths though the level over multiple attempts before success is achieved.sonic image2

The Party Games that are unlocked are a nice diversion, but overall Sonic and the Secret Rings suffers from the age-old style of substance issue.  A beautiful game to behold on the Wii, however a frustration to play.  6/10
