Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
It was a bold and seemingly sensible approach during the convergence drive of a few years back; combine a mobile phone with a hand-held gaming platform. For Nokia the result was the ill fated N-Gage. Nokia are now taking a software orientated approach to gaming.
It was weird holding the ‘Taco’ shaped N-Gage to your ear with the original Nokia design. But the games were ok, Tomb raider played pretty nicely, with a reasonable nod to the franchises' base game-play ideals.
Soon after came the second N-Gage design, with better colours, a much better game loading interface (no taking out the battery to put in a new game, like the original design) and a relocation of speaker/microphone so that an N-Gage phone user did not stand out in the crowd so much.
Still the platform was an underwhelming success with consumers.
At the San Francisco Game Developers Conference, Nokia have announced a new approach to mobile gaming. Amongst a clambering of announcements by others keen to get into Mobile Gaming.
Nokia S60 3rd edition devices will now be the focus of the N-Gage SDK. Nokia’s hope is that this will be the foundation for development to create games specifically for the unique challenges and opportunities of mobile gaming.
"The availability of the N-Gage SDK 1.0 today is the corner stone of Nokia's new development eco-system for developers to create connected mobile games in a familiar C++ environment," said Mark Ollila, Director of Technology & Strategy and Nokia Games Publishing, Nokia. "This single development channel impacts positively on development cycles and budgeting as well as creating new social connected gaming experiences that will lead the way to how people discover, buy and play games in the future."
Nokia also announced a semi partnership with publishers Glu Mobile, Indiagames and the wireless arm of THQ to create content for the new gaming push. Also introduced were confirmed games by Gameloft, Asphalt 3, Street Rules, Brothers In Arms, Hell's Highway, Brain Challenge, Midnight Pool and EA Mobile's FIFA 2008
