Security expert Applebaum to speak at LCA

Opinion and Analysis

Independent security professional Jacob Applebaum has been announced as the fourth and final keynote speaker for the 13th Australian national Linux conference which is being held in Ballarat from January 16 to 20.

Applebaum, a developer for the Tor project, the system enabling anonymous online communication, trains people worldwide on how to utilise the network.

The Tor network has been extremely helpful to dissident movements in both Iran and Egypt.

Applebaum was also a central part of the team that created the cold boot attacks, in which an individual with physical access to a computer is able to retrieve encryption keys from an operating system minutes after it has been shut down.

This kind of attack is possible because DRAM and SRAM retain data for a very short time after power has been shut off.

Applebaum is currently a staff research scientist at the University of Washington's Security and Privacy lab.

The other keynote speakers are GNOME Foundation executive director Karen Sandler, well-known FOSS advocate Bruce Perens and Perl developer Paul Fenwick.
