GNOME 3 release set for April 6

Opinion and Analysis

The GNOME Desktop Project has announced that it has scheduled the release of GNOME 3 on April 6 this year.

GNOME is one of the two better-known desktop environments used by GNU/Linux distributions, the other being KDE which went through an extensive redesign a few years ago.

The GNOME developers saw the need for a new design after KDE came out with KDE4 and, after much debate and discussion, settled on what they would do.

The release of GNOME 3 was initially due to take place in September 2010 but was pushed back, and version 2.3 was released instead. Development versions of the new suite are available for download and use here.

The project says GNOME 2 will continue to be supported by GNU/Linux distributions though several parts of that desktop will not have new releases after GNOME 3 is released.

All the applications that are part of GNOME 2 will work in GNOME 3; new and improved versions of the applications are planned.

The GNOME 3 interface will differ considerably from the old version and the rationale behind the changes has been documented online.
