Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Novell's latest SUSE release, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11, appears to be unable to boot from DVD on a PC on which another Linux distribution is installed. If you have Windows XP installed, the same DVD boots as it should.
I've just tested this out on two PCs, one running Debian Lenny and the other running MEPIS - both of which boot from a dozen other Linux and non-Linux discs without any problem - and a Windows XP PC. SLED 11 only boots from the drive on the PC with XP.
One of these Linux PCs is a single-core AMD64 and the other is a dual-core AMD64. The XP PC is a dual-core AMD64.
You, gentle reader, can draw your own conclusions. For me it looks like this is the height of interoperability!
Novell announced in Australia this morning that SUSE Enterprise Linux 11 had been released. The media release came to iTWire shortly after 11am.
The US release had already taken place and by 2pm I had downloaded the Desktop x86 DVD ISO - beats me why a single CD cannot be offered for testing purposes - and was ready to have a look at what it had to offer.
But, as I've pointed out earlier, the DVD wouldn't boot on either of my PCs that have Linux installed. It booted on my wife's PC which has XP installed!
The md5 sums are fine, the image is fine. But the DVD just sits there in the drive of both those PCs which have Linux installed and lets the system boot from the hard drive, the second choice in the BIOS.
After having checked everything that could be a fault at my end, I'm left wondering what conclusions I should draw.
Novell puts out a grandiose media release - 21 paragraphs of spiel, including such high-faluting sub-headings as "World-class Partner Ecosystem", "Advanced Linux Management", "Ubiquity: Linux how you want it, where you want it", "Interoperability: Leverage existing IT investments", and "Mission-Critical Computing: Designed to support your most important business needs". - and then provides a link that leads to a dud DVD.
Links to a PDF, supposedly providing documentation for SLED 11, bring up a 404.
