Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
This was announced at the conclusion of the 2008 conference at the Melbourne University today.
It is understood that Brisbane was also a strong contender to host the 2009 event. The Queensland capital hosted the 2002 event .
However, Linux Australia, the patron of the conference, is understood to have decided on Hobart in order to boost the interest in the Linux operating system on the island.
Brisbane has a strong community of free and open source software people, with the one of the better known among them being Anthony Towns, who was leader of the Debian GNU/Linux Project for a year from April 2006.
Hobart had also made a bid for this year's conference but was beaten to the punch by Melbourne.
Ben Powell and Leah Duncan, president and secretary respectively of the Tasmanian Linux Users Group, are co-chairing the organising committee for linux.conf.au 2009.
The only two cities to have played host twice are Melbourne (1999 and 2008) and Sydney (2001 and 2007 ).
