Construction needs cloud flexibility

Australia’s embattled construction sector could benefit from cloud based information systems that can be switched on and off in lockstep with individual projects – with the exception of those organisations based in remote areas like the Kimberleys.

NBN Co switches on Global Switch

Opinion and Analysis

The data centre that was a white elephant following the 2001 dot com crash, Global Switch, has just had its facilities contracted by the Government's NBN Co, something that will hopefully help the NBN succeed instead of becoming a white elephant all its own.

How fortunes can change for the digerati! Once Global Switch was an empty building, a victim of the dotcom boom and crash that saw great swathes of global fibre go dark, and giant data centres left processing the sound of one hand clapping.

Now, nearly a decade later, Global Switch has overcome its once elephantine ways, turning from a deathly pale white to what must now be a much healthier pink colour, alongside what must be also be a much healthier green colour to its bank account, with data centres being white hot today, instead of white elephants, with the NBN Co's announcement to use Global Switch another milestone for the data centre operation.

NBN Co is the company that the Australian Federal Government has set up to 'design, build and operate Australia's only wholesale-only, high-speed broadband network'.

Global Switch is listed as being 'a leading international wholesale data centre owner and operator', which the NBN Co will use to 'host its primary data centre'.

Within Global Switch will be the NBN Co's 'hardware and software systems, including those needed for the operation of its networks'. You'll be unsurprised to discover that such things don't come cheap: the value of the contract is '$3 million over the initial term.'

An initial term usually means subsequent terms, and given that the Federal Government expects the NBN to operate forever, it could well mean Global Switch will have the NBN Co contract for the term of your natural life.

NBN Co's head of corporate services, Mr Kevin Brown, said 'Global Switch had a facility in Ultimo, Sydney which was opened in July 2002, which met NBN Co's long-term needs.'

Mr Brown specifically added that: 'A number of our key software applications will run on NBN Co hardware equipment located in the Global Switch facility.

'Being a start-up, we can ensure that the hosting of all our hardware and software is done cost effectively and can be up-scaled as we grow.

'These very specialised facilities need to be secure, environmentally friendly and well run.'
