iPhone unlockers - don't upgrade to 3.0 yet!

Opinion and Analysis

We’re yet to see whether iPhone OS 3.0 launches for download in a few hours time, along with a new iPhone itself, or if both will be delayed, but the iPhone Dev Team has warned against rogue downloads promising yellowsnow updates, fake 3.0 unlocks and even upgrading to iTunes 8.2 itself.

Whether iPhone OS 3.0 is shortly available for free download to iPhone owners, and paid download to iPod Touch owners, or there is a delay, or even an overwhelming server meltdown from everyone trying to update at the same time, the much anticipated update is nearly here.

iPhone OS 3.0 delivers a raft of long desired features, more than compelling enough to want to instantly upgrade to.

And why wouldn’t you? A tiny slice of the new capabilities on offer includes: proper cut, copy and paste functionality, much more control and access for programmers (1000 new APIs), and better software that can email or surf the web from within a program, rather than dumping you out of the software and into the iPhone’s Mail or Safari software.

There’s finally the sending and receiving MMS messages, the greatly missed forwarding of SMS messages, the long awaited arrival of background alerts (promised for iPhone OS 2.0!) and possibly even some form of limited extra background processing, hardware access to the dock socket, Bluetooth AD2P stereo, expected new video recording capabilities and plenty more.

iPhone OS 3.0, barring any major bugs or the slowdowns that beset iPhone OS 2.0, is set to be the OS we’d have loved to received on day one with the original iPhone!

It erases many of the iPhone’s deficiencies compared with other smartphones, despite the iPhone’s amazing multi-touchscreen and user interface advances, and delivers most of those advances to existing iPhone 2G and 3G owners.

So, the desire to update immediately upon 3.0 being available will be intense, and for those with happily contracted and locked iPhones, many will do just that, even though they might be better off waiting for an inevitable iPhone OS 3.0.1 update – if history is any guide.
