Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Computer manufacturers have to differentiate their products from competitors, even when the basic spec is very similar, and this phenomenon is no more apparent, or at times lacking, when looking at the netbook market.
Thankfully, Toshiba have added some “unique” or just extra features to add to the “USP” list.
There’s Toshiba’s “sleep-and-charge” technology which lets you charge your USB powered devices (like phones, iPods etc), whether the NB200 is plugged into mains power or not, so you can continue charging your devices.
Naturally, if the computer is not plugged in, you’ll be discharging your netbook batteries, but if your phone is flat but you’ve still got charge in your NB200 batteries, it’s a fantastic emergency source of recharge power.
Also included is a 3D-accelerometer monitoring system for the hard drive which cushions bumps, knocks and can detect free falls, shocks or vibrations.
Another addition is new “synchronisation” software which Toshiba says lets you easily “download important data from your PC, enabling you to take your digital life with you wherever you go”.
The weight is 1.18kg with the 3-cell battery, and Toshiba has engineered the NB200 to support the “Energy Star V5.0” rating to “reduce environmental impact by minimising the amount of power the Mini Notebook uses”.
Colour choices include “high gloss black, arctic white & silver, indigo-silver and in the near future, a textured matt copper finish.”
There are three NB200 models, the 3220, 3221 and the 3219, at AUD $799, $899 and $949 respectively, with a redeemable AUD $100 cashback offer, which reduces the price accordingly.
The $799 model has a 120GB 5400 RPM hard drive, a 3-cell battery and all the other features listed above and on page 1, but no Bluetooth.
The $899 model is the same as the $799 model but instead sports a 160GB 5400 RPM hard drive.
The $949 model includes a 6-cell battery and includes Bluetooth 2.1, and all three models have a one year warranty.
All up, the NB200 is the upgrade Toshiba’s netbook line needed to better compete in the netbook space, and with some of Toshiba’s added touches will only make the decision over which netbook to buy that much more difficult.
