Watch out for fake Windows 7 beta 1 build 7000 torrents!

Opinion and Analysis

C'mon Microsoft! Release the damn thing already. The world awaits to see whether or not your new OS is a license to thrill, or whether even a world of Windows 7 betas is not enough.

Will the OS be one that gets people to let the beta live and let live on their PCs, or will they try it for a while and then think... live and let die, I'm going to Linux or back to XP??

Personally, I think Windows 7 has a bit of a golden eye about it. Whereas Vista started life a bit tarnished and was soon seen by many with a view to a kill, Windows 7 may prove to the world that you truly can live twice.

Heck, with the number of Windows releases, this "living only twice" business is clearly wrong - if you've got good software and good new versions of it, you can possibly live as many times as you like!

I mean, in the early days, Vista had a bit of a casino royale feeling to it - you never knew when your driver numbers would come up or where you would end up today when using it. It really was a bit of a gamble.

The road to SP1, and SP1 itself fixed a lot of that. Indeed it was a bit of a thunderball in the face of those who continued to deride Vista, because SP1 fixed a lot. Indeed, it surprised the living daylights out of a lot of people, who had the living daylights surprised out of them by Vista's disappointments in the first place.

With Windows 7 being up to a year away, which is an awfully long time, any planned quantum of solace for Windows XP seems equally far off into the distance. If only you could hire a man with a golden gun to put XP out of its misery. Well, as you see it, Microsoft. After all, a lot of people still really like XP.

Indeed, you've tried telling us that Vista was like diamonds, which were meant to be forever, but with so many computer doctors advising "no" on that one, and with you now telling us all Windows 7 is the future...

Well, I can only implore that you release it as soon as possible, to save us all from fake torrents, some of which no doubt come from Russia with love. And probably China, too. And elsewhere.

A lot of people that tried Windows Vista, got disappointed, said "never again" and then went back to XP or even, shock horror, Mac or Linux, could well find Windows 7 is the OS that makes them vow to never say never again.

You just need to release it, Microsoft. The world is waiting. If only you'd release it today, rather than some future tomorrow. After all, tomorrow never dies, and fake torrents never seem to either.
