Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Seagate say its FreeAgent drives for PCs work with XP and Vista, and come pre-loaded with “Seagate Manager” software, which lets you perform “scheduled automated back-ups and multi-computer synchronisation.”
For the security conscious, there’s also “software-based AES-256bit encryption and Seagate DrivePass password protection for drive access” to help keep info safe and private.
The drive can go to sleep once it has been idle for 15 minutes, come with “Energy Star 5 rated” AC adapters and now come packaged in 100% recyclable materials, while coming with a 5-year warranty.
Jane Shields, a research analyst with Parks Associates noted that: “With the amount of content being created and consumed today, the average broadband household will soon need close to a terabyte of storage to account for their personal media collections on PCs, portable devices, and DVRs.
“With Seagate’s coupling of high-capacity, reliable and easy-to-use solutions with attractive designs, the company is helping more people enjoy the benefits that come with backup and sharing of their digital media collections.”
Wolfgang Schlichting, research director, Removable Storage at IDC also chimed in with a comment, saying: “The growth of the 2.5-inch form factor external hard disk drive market has been very strong – almost doubling in 2Q08 compared with 2Q07.
“This growth is much higher than the overall market and driven by the products’ convenient size and connectivity, as well as their large storage capacity and affordability.”
And given the fact drive sizes keep on going up, we’re sure to see even bigger capacities around this time next year, when the FreeAgent range goes into its third generation, although for now the 2nd-gen is where it’s all at, at least for Seagate.
So... if you’re looking for more space, there’s tons of it out there, with Seagate doing its bit to make its thin rectangular packages look a bit more “iPod Touch”-like and modern - especially when placed in the optional dock.
Now, who will be first to get 2TB into a 3.5-inch drive, and 1TB into a 2.5-inch drive? Surely we’ll find out sometime in 2009!
