Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Using commercial software such as Roboform or the freeware equivalent KeePass is a great way to ensure you have different passwords for all your accounts, while protecting them all with one master password that is suitably complex while keeping the rest protected with strong 256bit encryption.
There is an argument that this then places all your passwords in one place for hackers to find and crack, but the alternative is to write them all down instead in a little black book and keep that hidden under lock and key somewhere.
The other well known but little followed tip is to ensure you change your passwords every few months, whether you feel like it or not. Having a program such as Roboform or Keepass makes this easier to manage.
Internet security software such as Norton Internet Security 2009 (and others) also have these kinds of services built in, so there are alternatives out there for you to use.
It’s also worth logging into your existing online accounts and checking to see what the security questions are for your password recovery. If they are simple answers without any additional characters or numbers to make them more complex, now is the time to change and update them.
You might never get hacked in your life, but you can’t know that.
So, don’t make it easy for anyone to even try and break in!
And if there’s a facility that ensures any new randomised passwords are sent to a secondary email account, or anything else that avoids someone from changing the password on the spot without you being able to confirm the change first, it might be time to consider changing to a service that does offer better protection.
You could also consider asking the online service you’re using to implement better security – and fast.
