Does Exit Reality suck?

Opinion and Analysis

Exit Reality – it’s the new plugin that’s going to transform every single website into a 3D virtual world, and unleash the power of 3D to everyone. So, why am I stuck in the reality of herky-jerky 3D motion, which is giving me a really bad first impression?!

It’s all over the news – the entire web can now be viewed in 3D! Or so say the wizar3ds at Exit Reality. Ok, so that 3D joke inside of the word “wizards” that I just did for fun in the previous sentence might be a bit lame.

But not as lame as my first experience of leaving this reality and exiting it for the one proffered up by Exit Reality.

Started up by 36 year-old Australian Danny Stefanic who dreamed of bringing 3D to the web 13 years ago, only launched the technology yesterday, so clearly there’s still plenty of time for the platform to dramatically improve.

But, in an article at the Sydney Morning Herald, Stefanic is quoted as saying that "ExitReality has been built to run on low-spec computers.”

The thing is, nowhere at the ExitReality site could I find any indication of required system specifications. I managed to find some specs at Simtel.com, one of the many download sites that seems to be hosting the Exit Reality download, aside from the primary recommended download location, which is the Exit Reality site itself.

Here the minimum specs are listed as needing a Pentium 4, 512MB of ram and a 128MB GPU.

Well, I have a Core Duo 1.83Ghz (not Core 2 Duo), 2GB of RAM of which 224MB is shared for my Intel 945 integrated graphics card. It runs Vista Aero just fine, although it’s not good enough to run Second Life.

Perhaps that’s the problem – but if so, where’s the indication at the Exit Reality site that my system is going to give such lousy performance? Why doesn’t the software advise me of this, if the software considers it a problem? After all, Second Life’s installation software flat out tells me my 3D isn’t good enough.

So, what else did I experience, and what does Stefanic have to say in celebrating the launch?

Please read on to page 2.
