40 reasons to lose Linux and vote Vista!

Opinion and Analysis

Challenged by my iTWire colleague and Linux lover Sam Varghese to come up with 40 reasons to lose Linux and vote Vista, I’ve done just that.

It all started quietly enough with iTWire colleague David M Williams writing an article entitled “5 reasons to upgrade from Windows Vista to Linux”, with David being a strong and well respected proponent of Linux.

Unfortunately, none of those reasons washed with me, I wasn’t tempted to dump Vista for even a microsecond with those arguments. So, being the journalist that I am, I countered back with an article entitled “10 reasons to stick with Vista and forget Linux.”

This piqued the interest of iTWire’s other major Linux and FOSS advocate, Sam Varghese, who took my 10 reasons and added 10 more of his own, culminating in an article entitled “20 reasons to shed the Microsoft yoke and use Linux”, while offering me the challenge to “Double or quit, Alex.”

Now, being the satisfied Vista user and good sport that I am, I couldn’t let this one slide by. In the spirit of having fun, which will undoubtedly be torn to shreds by the quasi-religious ravers of the Linux brigade, I’ve done just that, and offer to you my 40 reasons to lose Linux, and vote Vista!

Here we go:

1. Vista is far more polished than Linux, and in general, things “just work” far better in Vista than they do in Linux.

2. Vista has the widest software support, perhaps bested only by XP, for now. This includes the widest third-party software support, from commercial to free and open source software.

3. Vista has the widest hardware support, perhaps bested only by XP, for now.

4. Vista has the most advanced and widest range of security software available.

5. Vista has IE and Office, still the gold standards of Internet browsing and office work.

6. Vista has the best networking and Wi-Fi compatibility.

7. Vista has the best backup software and solutions for consumers.

8. Vista has the best games available for it.

9. Vista is the easiest operating system to use.

10. Vista has the best child safety software available for safe surfing.
