PwnageTool 2.0.2 with Installer 4 beta on verge of release

Opinion and Analysis

Original iPhone and iPhone 3G owners wanting to update to iPhone OS 2.0.1 while maintaining a jailbroken status don’t have much longer to wait, with the iPhone Dev Team saying the software should arrive “Friday”, although that’s likely Saturday for Australians.

Although the PwnageTool 2.0.2 was meant to be released by now, a last minute update from the RiPDev team behind the Installer 4 software has caused the iPhone Dev Team to delay PwnageTool’s new release by at least 24 hours.

PwnageTool 2.0.2 is designed to unlock and jailbreak the original 2G iPhone, and to jailbreak the iPhone 3G, with a 3G unlock still not yet available.

The new PnwageTool is, as always, for Mac systems, although the iPhone Dev Team expects the WinPwn people to be able to very quickly update WinPwn so Windows users can easily update their iPhones to OS 2.0.1, too.

A new version of the Cydia third party software installer will be bundled, containing “some bugfixes and other general goodness”, while the competing third party software installer, Installer 4 beta will also be included because it has reached a stable beta version and the iPhone Dev Team only wanted to do one release and not two.

They also wanted to avoid unnecessary questions over why they didn’t just wait a bit longer for Installer 4 to appear, but instead, a lot of ungrateful commenters at their blog people are asking why they have waited when Installer 4 could easily be installed later.

I guess it’s a case of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” – but plenty of people are grateful the iPhone Dev Team have managed to do such a great job in so quick a time.

As is the case with PwnageTool 2.0.1, there is still no 3G unlock, with the Dev Team offering the same warning they did a few days ago when iPhone OS 2.0.1 appeared on the scene. This new firmware version makes changes to the iPhone 3G baseband, and given the lack of a 3G unlock as yet, clearly finding an unlock is still proving hard.

So, what is the latest on the 3G unlock from the iPhone Dev Team? Please read on to page 2.
