Microsoft offers Office and OneCare in US at subscription price

Opinion and Analysis

Bryson Gordon, group product manager, Microsoft Office said: “With Microsoft Equipt we’re improving our customers’ computing experience by giving them essential software in a package that offers an easy install and setup experience, as well as a convenient and affordable way to stay updated with the latest versions of Office and Windows Live OneCare.”

Elliot Becker, vice president, general merchandise manager technology, Circuit City said: “We are very pleased to be the first partner to offer Microsoft Equipt through nearly 700 Circuit City retail outlets throughout the U.S.”

Becker continued: “Microsoft Equipt delivers on an unmet customer need for an easy way to get the essential productivity and security software in an all-in-one package. And with the added benefit of getting the latest software as part of the Microsoft Equipt subscription, we expect this service to be a runaway hit.”

There is no information as yet on when the program will be rolled out in other parts of the world.

A similar subscription program for Microsoft Office 2003 was undertaken in Australia but without access to online storage for Office documents and without the OneCare Internet security suite.

It was priced higher, if memory serves, and I believe it was discontinued at the time as it wasn’t very popular, although this may simply have been because the cost was too expensive.

There are serious alternatives to Microsoft’s offering. These include Google Docs, the Open Office suite, Zoho Office, ThinkFree Office and others, all of which claim Office 2007 compatibility and all of which are free.

Microsoft’s “Live tools” collection is already free, while numerous Internet security alternatives exist, including AVG’s and Avast’s anti-virus programs, ZoneAlarm’s free firewall, the Spybot Search and Destroy anti-spyware software and others.

However Microsoft software is still very polished and capable, and as a single installation suite has a convenience factor, absolutely compatibility factor, professionalism and ease of use factor that the alternatives will have to work even harder to beat, despite their being free compared with Microsoft’s package costing US $70 per year.
