Aussie iTunes TV show selection – a bit of a yaaawner

Opinion and Analysis

Savvy iTunes users in Australia have also discovered that it’s easy to purchase US iTunes gift cards from online sources or from friends in the US, which can then be used to download US iTunes content, including TV shows and movies, even if this too is of questionable legality.

So, it’s a shame it has taken TV shows so long to come to iTunes, and it is genuinely great they’ve arrived at last, even if for some Australian iTunes users they’ve been getting US iTunes content for some time already.

But that doesn’t stop the initial Australian selection from being a yawner, nor does it stop DVDs from being a better option for those with the time and knowledge to convert into iPhone compatible video clips.

What we really need to see next is a lot more shows becoming available, even if they aren’t available the day after they air in the US (to preserve TV network distribution agreements), and the next big step is movies.

Are they coming soon too? You would imagine so, especially with BigPond Movies already happily offering movies to rent, and EzyDownload set to offer movies to rent and own via download from September.

Then the next question revolves around getting downloads in high definition quality. But that’s likely still far off into the future, with all the real excitement of the actual iPhone 3G launch yet to come first.

When more TV shows arrive, I’ll be a lot more excited. Until then, welcome to the legal TV show download club, Apple Australia. What took you so long?
