Sony Ericsson unveils C905 Cyber-shot phone – with 8.1 megapixel camera!

Opinion and Analysis

The C905 has a 2.4-inch scratch-resistant mineral glass display, with a 240x340 QVGA resolution and capable of 262,144 colours.

This makes it much smaller than the iPhone 3G’s 3.5-inch display, and .4-inches smaller than the Nokia N96’s 2.8-inch display.

While it’s perfectly good for taking photos and watching videos, it still could have been bigger, although a bigger screen means a bigger device, and SE is clearly hoping the 8.1 megapixel camera will be the killer feature, along with GPS, that helps this camera phone really stand out.

Its dimensions are 104.0 x 49.0 x 18.0 mm (19.5mm over the lens) and it weighs 136 grams.

Software is included to do picture blogging and video blogging to keep the blog generation happy.

The Track ID feature to help you identify music you’re listening to is also included as standard, as are other features like album art for music, voice recording, video calling, video streaming, the NetFront browser (which should be immediately replaced with the free Opera Mini), MMS, vibration, FM radio, RSS feeds, tethering capability to use as a high-speed wireless modem and more.

The C905 essentially has all the well known features of other high-end SE Cyber-shot phones, but with the addition of an 8.1 megapixel camera, a slightly larger screen, GPS and what is presumed (but not confirmed) to be 640x480 video recording.

No prices are available as yet, but if you’re a Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot fan and want a new phone to upgrade to, this one is definitely it for 2008.

But whether or not it is enough to tempt you away from an iPhone 3G or a Nokia N96 is something you’ll have to decide for yourself!
