Well, it will be a different story once Blu-ray discs are $1 each or less, but it will probably still take a couple of years before that happens – if it happens at all.
Why? Well, seeing as Sony is keen not to see the incredible price drops that happened with DVD happen with Blu-ray so quickly, will Blu-ray discs ever cost $1 or less each? Time will tell.
And, you can’t easily plug a portable hard drive into an HD television to share your high-def video recordings.
This means there are still clearly advantages to the Blu-ray video disc format, especially if you already have a Blu-ray movie player connected to your television and/or your friends and family do.
So... it’s still horses for courses. If we could have avoided the whole Blu-ray and HD DVD war, we might have been at this point a couple of years ago, when hard disks weren’t as cheap as they are today.
But these are the cards that Sony helped to deal out to itself. Today's announcement of cheaper Blu-ray drive and disc prices are great... but I just hope it’s not too little, too late.
