Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu says that: "Our goal is to deliver a superb user experience while making it simple and cost-effective for device manufacturers to be able to bring their devices to the consumer marketplace.”
Shuttlworth continues: “Ubuntu has in a very short period transformed the perception of the Linux desktop experience. Many more people will experience Linux for the first time through these devices so working with Canonical, using our UI and leveraging software from the Moblin project is the best way to ensure the netbook experience is a success."
Doug Fisher, vice president, Software and Solutions Group for Intel says that: "At Intel, we see netbooks as an opportunity to expand basic Internet usage throughout the world through simple and affordable devices for consumers.”
Fisher continued: “The combination of Ubuntu Netbook Remix with Moblin technologies optimized for the Intel Atom processor will deliver a good Internet and media experience on Intel-based netbooks."
No doubt Xandros won’t want to let Canonical steal all of the Linux thunder, while other Linux distros will also want their share of the ever growing Linux pie, especially in the subnotebook space.
It looks like the low cost, subnotebook is the true spark that will send Linux into the consumer stratosphere after all.
Perhaps the year of Linux on the desktop must truly be first preceded by the year of Linux on the subnotebook.
It’s happening now in 2008, but with the Intel Atom processor only in its first incarnation, with Intel no doubt already working on improved Atom processors for release in 2009 and beyond, Linux on the subnotebook and desktop is finally picking up steam as never before.
Windows 7 may well be here in late 2009, but the wow truly is starting now for the world of Linux, and with plenty more wow yet to come.
I’m not sure if a multi-touch tweaked version of Windows Vista, aka Windows 7, will be enough to stop Linux from launching into the consumer consciousness as never before, with the explicit help of Intel.
While the Wintel alliance may still be many years from ever ending, the Lintel alliance is certainly gathering steam. Microsoft won’t be happy, but if it pushes them to make Windows better than ever, then so much the better for us all.
