OMG! Microsoft spills bean on Windows 7 with update

Opinion and Analysis

In a previous article on the woes of installing XP SP3, I lamented that Microsoft should keep its mouth shut until it had something to say, but then criticised Microsoft for not sharing information and accused it of holding state secrets. Some accused me of wanting two opposing things at the same time.

Well, here is a perfect example of Microsoft being able to, so far at least, do those two opposing things at the same time: say little more than Windows 7 is coming, but also say it will be a lot better, ending the effective official “cone of silence” on the entire Windows team.

Clearly, the Windows team is now much more free to start sharing discoveries the advancements of the platform for all to see, and we can be certain that we'll start hearing more. There's only around 18 months to go until 2010, after all.

Oh, and Microsoft has posted over 100 case studies on businesses using Vista, but I wonder if our Linux expert, David M Williams, can find any errors or inconsistencies as he did with some of Microsoft’s existing Linux case study material.

So, Windows 7 so far sounds like a version of Vista that will end up going through 3 extra years of beta testing, but this time with the promise it’ll be a right ripper when it comes to market. We’ll just have to wait in the meantime, either using Vista (with or without SP1), XP or something else.

How Windows 7 actually ends up turning out will be a whole different kettle of fish!

But at least Microsoft has started talking officially about Windows 7. The countdown to the true first consumer beta – possibly within a year, has now officially begun at last!
