Behold, the BlackBerry Bold

Opinion and Analysis

Of course multimedia is a standard part of BlackBerry phones today, although it certainly wasn’t to begin with. There’s a music player, video player, photo slideshow viewer, a 3.5mm headphone socket, inbuilt stereo speakers and an equalizer.

Media is managed via the Roxio Media Manager for BlackBerry, and it’s even compatible with iTunes – although likely only with non-DRM tracks in your iTunes collection, enhancing the music utility of the BlackBerry device.

Although there are plenty of other features, one particular stand out is inbuilt noise cancellation technology which helps to offset background noise when talking on the phone, while the speakerphone is rated as “powerful”.

All the regular BlackBerry push email options are there, while battery life is rated at 5 hours and 13 days for standby.

Due in the Northern Hemisphere summer (or winter for us Aussies), the Bold is certainly the best BlackBerry yet, and enterprise customers will appreciate all the security and remote wipe capabilities, along with good ol’ ultra secure push email that BlackBerry offers as standard.

For corporations that need BlackBerry’s enhanced security, and especially for those with existing BlackBerry infrastructure and servers, the new model will certainly be attractive, and will help to fend off the 3G iPhone threat, despite the iPhone 2.0’s ActiveSync compatibility and other enterprise features.

RIM most certainly can’t be counted out of the race yet by any means whatsoever, but come June 9 the rest of the world’s mobile phone manufacturers will have to endure the most frenetic iPhone hype the world has ever seen.

BlackBerry has done well to introduce a US $150 million software fund and is definitely challenging the iPhone threat, but the world still wonders when a full screen, touch screen BlackBerry will make an appearance. The short answer is... not anytime soon!
