Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
While the deal is not exclusive to Officeworks, Dell doesn’t expect any new retail partners soon, and really wants to make the Officeworks deal... work.
Clearly, there are a lot of issues at play in properly training – and resourcing – and other retail partners, and there can be no doubt that the rest of the industry will be closely watching to see just how successful Dell and Officeworks are in their new venture.
Should Dell’s retail computers prove popular, other potential retailers will likely sound out the possibility of also carrying Dell computers - although Dell has no plans to sell through the established IT channel.
Dell and Officeworks were unable to verify which versions of Vista would be on sale at Officeworks stores, or if any XP downgrade options would be available, but logic dictates we’re likely to see a mix of Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium and Vista Business.
Dell’s Evan Williams was also unable to confirm when Ubuntu would come pre-installed on Officeworks machines, although he did say Dell was “looking at it closely”, suggesting Ubuntu may come without actually confirming it.
Dell said its existing kiosks in three states would continue trading despite the new retail move.
Given the popularity of Officeworks and their strong retail position in Australian and their wide number of stores, Dell's move into retail should prove successful, putting even more pressure onto all the other PC manufacturers already in the retail space.
