Blu-ray vs HD DVD - the war that’s strangling HD

Opinion and Analysis

Yet player prices from both sides will continue to fall, just as the price of DVD players did, except on a much faster timescale, with the race to the US $200 mark and then the US $100 mark only a matter of time – perhaps we’ll see a $100 player on special for Christmas 2008, if not sooner.

Of course, as player prices tumble, some consumers might just find themselves buying a high-def player in each format so they can watch the movies they want.

But for Christmas 2007, the confusion for consumers is sadly no clearer, with the cheapest choice being simply to do nothing and just keep using an existing DVD player and TV.

Upgrading later in 2008 should get your more HDTV bang for your buck, with the high-def player you could buy today likely being a high-def recording model next year too.

By all means, if you want high-def now, and you’re cashed up, go for whichever format takes your fancy, or bite the bullet and buy both. But the smart money on this one will wait until the high-def dust settles some more.
