Most popular Aussie web searches of ’07 from Yahoo!7

Opinion and Analysis

Yahoo!7 have announced the annuals rankings of the most popular Australian searches of 2007 were celebrities, scandals, wild weather and home ownership, with Britney Spears topping three of the lists and Apple’s iPod Nano topping the tech section.
Yahoo!7’s Pulse is similar to Google’s Zeitgeist, showing the most popular searches of the year and giving marketers, demographers, educators, politicians and the public an insight into the mind of the Australian public.

Top of the list was Britney Spears, whose head shaving, umbrella lashing, custody fighting and lack of underwear wearing antics saw her claim the top celebrity spot in the categories of top searches, top female celebrities and top scandals, at least for Yahoo!7 users.

The second most popular search of 2007 was the Australian weather, from storms and floods in New South Wales hard, to beautiful sunny weekends, with users regularly searching for updates and more weather information.

Third on the list of top searches was real estate, jumping from seventh spot in 2006, while other celebrities also made an appearance in the top searches category, including Jessica Alba, Anna Nicole Smith, Justin Timberlake and the celebrity couple `Brangelina’, which Yahoo!7 says proves “that Australians just can’t seem to get enough celebrity scandal”.

In the top tech toy/gadget section, Apple’s iPod Nano is top of the search list, coming in just ahead of the phenomenally popular Nintendo Wii at number 2. Sony’s PS3 was able to pip the Xbox 360 at the post somewhere in the world at last, coming in at number 3 with  the Xbox 360 at number 4.

Digital cameras are number 5 on the list, followed by a search for Navman GPS at 6, mp3 player is at number 7, the Nokia N95 came in at number 8, followed by camcorder at 9 and Bluetooth GPS in the 10th spot.

All of the top searches of 2007 in different categories can be found at the Pulse section of Yahoo!7’s site, with some of the most popular listed here:
