Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
Western Digital have announced the world’s largest capacity ‘Scorpio’
2.5-inch hard drive, a 3Gbit/sec SATA drive that stores 320GB on two
platters, giving mobile users more storage capacity than ever, while
Toshiba also makes some hard disk announcements.
Laptop makers now have a new choice for their high end configurations with the launch of Western Digital’s new 320GB Scorpio brand 2.5-inch hard drives, blowing away the competition through sheer storage size supremacy.
Running at a respectable 5,400 RPM, the drive features 8MB of cache, and will doubtless be included in some high-end ‘desktop replacement’ laptops twice, giving power users the ability to have 640GB of storage in a mobile device.
Although no price has yet been announced for the drive, it will naturally command a premium over competing 250GB models (the largest size offered by any competitors) both for its size and its absolute newness.
The drive will clearly come in handy in today's data rich world, with consumers storing more photos, movies, TV shows, documents and other files on their personal computes than ever before.
Toshiba have also announced new hard drives, also their largest capacity is currently 250GB, set to retail for US $189.99 – for both the internal and external version, oddly enough.
Looks like 2008 could well be the year that 2.5-inch hard drives break the 500GB barrier – the only question is which hard drive manufacturer will be the first to reach that goal with a publicly available model that both computer companies and consumers can buy.
For now Western Digital are the winners, able to sell the largest capacity throughout the holiday season, but their competitors surely won’t let Western Digital have the lead for too long – expect more announcements from hard disk manufacturers soon.
