Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
The report says that 83% of Australians start to freak out if they lose the use of their mobile phone. Ok, ok, so the press release didn’t say that. It said that those who lose the use of the phone experience severe disruption to life, panic attacks and feelings of loss and helplessness.
I’d say it would seriously have to depend on the situation before I got that freaked out about losing mobile phone power, but on the other hand there’s little that’s more annoying than your phone going flat at precisely the wrong moment.
The report says that Australians are so keen “to avoid the inconvenience that a staggering 40% would prefer to lose $30 than the use of their mobile phone for one day”, and that “3 in 4 of those surveyed claim that they rely on their mobile phone more than their own mother – who gave them life!”
We learn that “one third of young people reported having ‘been left stranded’ because of a dead mobile phone battery”, and interestingly, the report says that “nearly half of those surveyed confessed to arguing with their partners as a result of not being able to call or text due to a flat battery”.
The biggest concerns by those who lose the use of their mobile phone due to a flat battery are that they will miss an important call (95%) or that without their mobile phone they don’t know many, if any, of their telephone numbers, even those of family, friends or work colleagues (90%).
