Sony CEO promises 380 new PS3 games: revival begins?

Opinion and Analysis

Let’s not forget, we can also look forward to the prospect of even better games that will arrive at this time in 2008. Why? Well, they’ll be ‘third generation next-gen titles’, created by programmers who are yet another year more experienced in creating games for the PS3 and are discovering even more tricks and power, as happened with the PS2 and the PS1 before that.

New games programmers for the PS3 will get to learn from those who have learned the tricks, but this will also apply for the Xbox 360 and the Wii.

Given that all three ‘next-gen’ games consoles are now available to buy more or less anywhere in the world, with those long anticipated launches now firmly behind us, the 2007 holiday season is a critical time for each platforms. They’ll each want to want to claim victory in January 2008, but theoretically, as the Highlander said, “There can be only one” who can claim “true victory”.

But is that really true in the 21st Century? Perhaps we have learnt to share. After all, there should still be some pretty sizeable rabbits that each company will be pulling out of their respective hats over the next few months leading up to the frenetic Christmas/holiday season at the end of the year.

If that happens, and the new games and features really resonate with consumers, there’s every chance all three consoles will end up with respectable gains, giving each company a chance to claim victory in some way and muddying each other’s claim to “true victory” status.

Stringer’s statement of 380 new games is just stating the obvious – of course there will be a flood of new titles. What will be key is how good any of them are, and what games Nintendo and Microsoft offer to consumers. As we’ve been saying for a while now, we truly are in the golden age of gaming, and it’s going to keep on going for quite a while yet.

2007 will see the biggest marketing bonanza over the three games consoles that the gaming industry has ever seen – and especially if all consoles do well, it’ll be even bigger in 2008.

Consumers, start your wallets: games console makers and games companies are hoping you’ll be opening it often – thank goodness there’s supposed to be price cuts on the way!
