Gecko cellphone will appeal to parents not kids

Opinion and Analysis

Gecko is launching the US Firefly cellphone-for-kids in Australia  and positioning it as "the must have product for the 6-9 year old age group." Can't see it somehow.
More likely it will appeal to parents who want to the security of having their children able to initiate and receive communication. But today's IT savvy-kids will probably accept it only under parental edict: "if you want a phone it's this or nothing".

Vodafone was generous enough to give journalists a 3G Mootrola phone as a Christmas present last year. Stuck in the middle of a two year contract, I could not use mine. My, then seven year old, son got his hands on it. "Does it have games Dad?"

Of course it does and not only inbuilt games but access to a vast range of downloadable games (which cost money). Foolishly I showed him, just once, how to download and install them. Having tasted the possibilities of the adult versions, something as basic as the Gecko, I suggest, just won't cut the mustard.
