Telstra has revealed the addition of almost one million new mobile services in the six months to December 2011, but Sensis revenues plummeted 24 percent in 12 months.
My phone rang. I answered it. A long silence followed by "Good Morning my name is Dennis Wilson. How are you today?" in a strong Indian accent. A dead giveaway that someone in an Indian call centre was trying to sell me something.
And indeed so it was: a new Samsung X640 phone on the Optus network, because my home phone number had been "specially selected" to receive this outstanding offer, "moyt". As if peppering the spiel with the good old Aussie greeting, even strongly accented might convince me that the caller was dinky-di, fair dinkum and true blue.
Far from convinced but mildly interested I asked what seemed like the most obvious question: "Which network is it on, 2G or 3G?"
Dennis Wilson wasn't ready for this one. "It's on one of the best networks, Optus.
"Yes but Optus has two networks, a 2G or GSM network and a 3G network. Which is it?
"One minute please" Long pause. "It works on both networks."
Not according to Samsung's website it doesn't. Nor, as my "moyt" Dennis Wilson claimed, does it have a 3 megapixel camera, it's only a basic VGA (640 x 480) camera.
I very much doubt that Optus was responsible for this sales pitch, but theirs was the first, and only name mentioned. So perhaps they need to be very careful about how their resellers are allowed to use it.
