The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Well of course, it never happened and a year later GlobeTel, still plugging the vision as strong as ever, announced that Sanswire had entered into a joint venture agreement with Florida-based Appogeo Enterprises Corporation to launch five Stratellites over Columbia that would be capable of providing broadband access services. Appogeo plans to invest a total of $US50 million in the project, and according to GlobeTel, the network "would be the first of its kind in the world". However, there was no indication given of the timeframe for the project. GlobeTel said only that "funding would be based on a construction schedule to be set by Sanswire and would be released to Sanswire pursuant to the terms of the agreement".
Finally, in December 2006 the company got one of its airships off the ground into a tethered low altitude location and boasted about its communications capabilities. "The airship contained GlobeTel's proprietary HotZone 4010 technology, with Wi-Fi, WiMax and VoIP over DECT capabilities within one unit. The HotZone provided wireless broadband coverage for the invited guests, who also tested the system by using a DECT standard cordless phone to place calls that were routed through GlobeTel's StrateVoIP voice over IP platform.
"In addition to providing internet access and telephone service, the Sanswire 2A provided a real-time video surveillance feed from a remote control camera attached to the airship. This convergence of GlobeTel technologies demonstrates the effectiveness of delivering communications via the processes the Company had all along envisioned." Sanswire president, Doug Murch, claimed that the demo had put the company "at the forefront of using airships as communications platforms."
That was pretty much the last time I'd heard from GlobeTel about the Sanswire project so I was intrigued to get a release this week reporting that Sanswire Networks and Elisra Electronic Systems Ltd, "one of the world's leading providers of superior, battlefield proven solutions" had agreed to establish working teams with a view to "identify domestic US and international defence, law enforcement, emergency and homeland security business channels and applications under a teaming agreement."
The agreement calls for the integration of Sanswire's low and medium altitude SkySat airships and high altitude Stratellite airships with relevant Elisra's electronic systems and applications.
