Apple finally adjusts Australian App Store prices for $A/$US shift

Opinion and Analysis

Mac and iPhone owners have been complaining that App Store and Mac App Store prices are relatively high in Australia. Apple has now rebalanced the price levels, bringing them into closer alignment with current exchange rates.

Yesterday, some of us experienced problems connecting to Apple's App Store and Mac App Store. It turns out that this was due to "scheduled maintenance".

Is it just coincidence that prices have changed in the Australian store? Items that previously cost $A1.19 are now $A0.99, and so on.

For example, Calculator! now costs $A0.99 at the Australian App Store, and $US0.99 in the US store. That makes the lowest-cost apps slightly cheaper in Australia than in the US, once GST and sales taxes are factored in.

At the other end of the price range, Aperture now lists at $A84.99 in the Australian Mac App Store (previously $A99), compared with $US79.99.

Apple recently announced that Mac OS X 10.7 Lion will cost $A31.99, which is broadly in line with the revised price levels. The US price will be $US29.99 (at today's exchange rate, that's $A27.94, or $A30.74 including GST).

It's not only Australian pricing that's changed - see page 2.
