White iPhone 4 conversions: legit or not?

The seller of a white iPhone 4 conversion kit has attracted more attention than he bargained for.


A young New York man selling a conversion kit to turn a regular iPhone 4 into the repeatedly delayed white version has run into a problem.

When Apple announced the iPhone 4, it revealed that the handset would be available in black or white, but the white version has yet to appear. The company has cited manufacturing issues, and the latest word is that it will arrive sometime in the northern Spring.

But Fei Lam began selling white iPhone conversion kits in July via his WhiteiPhone4Now web site. Three kits are offered: a full conversion, back panel only, and front panel with home button. The front panel is pre-assembled and includes the Retina display.

According to the site, the kits contain "Original/OEM parts". And that's where things get murky.
