27in iMac screen flicker fix - take two

Opinion and Analysis

Is Apple preparing a second fix for the notorious screen flicker on 27in iMacs?

Posters in Apple's support discussions forums are asserting that AppleCare staff are telling them that a new fix will be available in February.

Owners say they have been told to expect the fix in one or three weeks.

It's far from clear whether the purported fix will be a second software update or a hardware change.

The 27-inch iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 was released on December 21, 2009 and was specifically aimed at "issues that may cause image corruption or display flickering."

Some people (including the first poster to report that a fix would be arriving in February) are drawing a long bow by suggesting a link between the three-week shipping time for 27in iMacs and the assertion that a fix will arrive in three weeks.

That seems possible but unlikely. While shipping times for purchases from the online Apple Store have increased, they haven't suddenly shot up as if a shipping freeze had been imposed while a fix was made.
