Performance Update 1.0 arrives for Leopard and Snow Leopard

Opinion and Analysis

Apple has released Performance Update 1.0 for Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 - but it's not for everyone.

Performance Update 1.0 is intended to prevent pauses in operation related to the hard drive in certain Intel based Macs.

Specifically, the candidates for the update are MacBook Air (Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2.53GHz, Mid 2009), iMac (20-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009), MacBook (13-inch, Early 2009), MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009), MacBook (13-inch, Aluminium, Late 2008), MacBook Air (Late 2008), MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), iMac (24-inch, Early 2009), iMac (20-inch, Early 2009), Mac mini (Early 2009).

According to Apple, only a small number of customers have reported the problem, but it would make sense to install the update on any of the affected computers.

Attempting to do so on an inappropriate computer will result in the message "This computer does not need this update".

The computer must be restarted after installing the update, so don't start the job if you're in a hurry.

Performance Update 1.0 can be downloaded via Software Update (be warned, the actual installation may be a manual process), or from the Support Downloads page.
