New iPods next week?

Opinion and Analysis

An apparent shortage of iPods has bolstered speculation that new models will be announced next week.

There are widespread reports that the current range of iPods is in short supply in retail channels, although the Apple Store still shows immediate availability of all models.

News of the purported shortage is being taken as evidence that Apple's rumoured September 9 media event will see the arrival of new iPods.

That's hardly a stretch given the company's history of announcing new iPods at this time of year ahead of the Christmas/holiday shopping season.

It seems widely accepted that the next-gen iPods will feature cameras.

Other mooted changes include increased storage capacities and - for the nano - the incorporation of a wider (or deeper, in the normal orientation) screen.

If the arrival of new iPods at this time of year is considered ho-hum, there's still much 'will they, won't they' speculation about the debut of Apple's tablet. However, the consensus seems to be that a 2010 announcement is the most likely scenario.
