Mac leading PC industry out of recession?

Opinion and Analysis

Apple's Mac shipments are rebounding, according to Morgan Stanley.

Apple took a sales hit early in the year, with the broader PC market being saved largely by apparently temporary customer interest in relatively low-cost netbooks, a segment Apple doesn't play in.

According to Morgan Stanley analyst Kathryn Huberty (as reported by Fortune), Apple recorded month-on-month growth in commercial Mac shipments of 25 percent, compared with market growth of just over one percent.

And with the arrival of new MacBook Pros in early June, she expects continued growth for that month.

Huberty predicts Apple will announce sales of 2.5 million Macs for the second quarter of calendar 2009 when it releases its results later this month. That's practically flat on a year-on-year basis, as the company shipped 2.496 million Macs during the same period in 2008.

During 1Q09, Apple sold 2.22 million Macs, down 3 percent year-on-year, and down from 2.52 million in the previous quarter.
