Apple has at last begun selling unlocked iPhones through its online store.

So you've got your eye on an iPhone but you don't want to put any extra dosh into the hands of your phone company and you don't live in easy reach of one of Apple's few retail stores in Australia.

Now there's another option: you can buy an unlocked iPhone 3G or 3GS from Apple's online store.

Prices start at $A719 for an 8G iPhone 3G, with the 16G iPhone 3GS at $A879 and the 32G version at $A1040.

Free shipping is offered in all cases, and extending the warranty to two years with AppleCare is an extra $A99.

"iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS and connect to iTunes 8.2 to complete activation," notes Apple.
