You really need offsite backup for those irreplaceable files such as digital photos. If your digital album is too big to use online backup, it doesn't take too long to burn a few DVDs that you can send to a friend or sibling for safe keeping.
If you take that approach, remember to send updates after big events such as holidays or parties.
And there's more to data management than that.
Don't confuse backup and archiving.
Backup is about restoring your current set of files, while archiving involves moving data that you don't really need (but might do one day) to appropriate storage.
In a domestic situation, do you really need to keep all of your photos on the computer? I'm not saying you should delete all but the best shots (after all, that dodgy snap might be the last one of Auntie Ethel that you ever take), but there's something to be said for having a regular clear out and moving the lesser photos offline.
Just don't fall into the trap of only retaining one copy, and keep track of the shelf life of whatever media you use.
