New iMacs go faster and pave the way for Snow Leopard

Opinion and Analysis

The real advantage will come following the arrival of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Due in the coming months, Snow Leopard will include OpenCL, a non Apple specific technology that makes it easy for developers to take advantage of the computational power of modern graphics chips so that more calculations can be performed at the same time by a program.

If you plan to run an external display, note that the mini-DVI connector has been replaced with a Mini DisplayPort right across the iMac range.

Also, the FireWire 400 port has been dropped in favour of an extra USB 2.0 port, but the FireWire 800 remains.

The iMac now comes with a new keyboard. Unlike its predecessor, it does not have a numeric keypad and appears to be a wired equivalent of the wireless keyboard. Those who find the keypad useful may specify the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad at no extra cost.

In the past, Apple has been criticised on environmental grounds, largely because it didn't trumpet its plans or credentials. But that's changed.

Apple now brags that the iMac has EPEAT Gold status, exceeds the Energy Star 4.0 requirements, has PVC-free internal components and cables, and contains no brominated flame requirements.

But Greenpeace will probably still find something to complain about.
