Mac OS X 10.5.7 prerelease hits developers

Opinion and Analysis

The one common thread to the reports is 10.5.7 will fix an extensive list of bugs.

How long a list? It appears that 70-odd bugs have already been squashed, and experience suggests there may be more by the time 10.5.7 goes public.

According to OS X Brazil (formerly HMBT), 10.5.7 build 9322 weighs in at 771M for the combo update and 400M for the delta update.

This is not significantly greater than the final version of 10.5.6. The equivalent updaters were 668M and 372M respectively.

With Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard expected around mid-year, it is quite possible that 10.5.7 will be the last update to Leopard before 10.6 arrives.

But that does not mean there won't be a 10.5.8.

Mac OS X 10.4.11 was released in mid November 2007, a few weeks after the launch of Mac OS X 10.5. Since that time there have only been security updates for 10.4.11.

A final update to 10.5 following the delivery of 10.6 seems eminently possible.
