Apple tweaks NVIDIA graphics software

Opinion and Analysis

A new software update from Apple promises improvements to systems using certain NVIDIA GPUs. But some owners have been left confused about exactly which models the update is for.

According to Apple, "This update improves cursor movement when using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter with the Mini DisplayPort enabled MacBook Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro.

"It also improves playback of HD video running on systems with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or GeForce 9600M graphics."

That's more like it. Despite being brief, the announcement clearly states what hardware is involved, and what the result of applying the update should be.

Or does it?

The list of MacBook models in the first paragraph is straightforward enough. If you've got any member of the MacBook family that includes a Mini DisplayPort, the update is for you.

The section about the GeForce 7300 GT and 9600M is less clear.

Models fitted with those GPUs include certain Mac Pro configurations, and the late 2006 24in iMac.
