The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Mastenbrook now suggests the use of the RCDefaultApp preference pane (which appears as Default Apps in System Preferences once installed) to ensure all three URL types are either disabled or associated with a program other than Safari.
With a standard Mac OS X load, the only other program available for the purpose is Mail.
If, like me, you don't find using Mail as an RSS reader to be a satisfactory experience, free alternatives include NetNewsWire, NewsFire, Shrook, and the open source Vienna.
Given that Vienna and Shrook include WebKit browsers, I think I'll steer clear of them for now. It might be unfair to tar them with the same brush as Safari, but in the absence of further information I'm inclined to play it safe.
The user interfaces of NetNewsWire and NewsFire look too much like Mail to me, so I might as well continue to use Mail.
If you think I've misjudged either of those programs, or you have another suggestion, please leave a comment.
The suggested workaround for Safari on Windows is still to use a different web browser until the problem is fixed.
