Are Yahoo!'s privacy changes just window dressing?

Opinion and Analysis

Exactly what data is it that Yahoo! will be keeping for the extended period? Neither the company's announcement nor the privacy statement on its web site provides an answer to that question, at least at the time of writing.

Furthermore, "Yahoo! may have to retain data for longer periods to meet other legal obligations."

Again, what data is being retained, and for what purposes? The company is silent on this point too.

So what Yahoo! is really saying is "we'll anonymise your data in our logs within 90 days, except for the data we don't anonymise and we won't actually tell you what that is or how long we'll keep it."

Do you think this will "deepen [Yahoo!'s] trusted relationship with users" as Toth suggests?

Just as there is 'security theatre' designed to make people think an organisation is doing something about security, this smacks of 'privacy theatre.'

Yahoo! says the changes are in response to pressure from regulators, legislators and privacy advocates around the world. Do they go far enough or do you want to see greater controls over identifiable information stored by search engines and other Internet services?
