Firmware updates for late 2008 MacBook family

Opinion and Analysis

Apple has released a slew of firmware updates for recent MacBooks.

The six updates fall into two categories.

EFI Firmware Updates for the late 2008 (aka unibody) MacBook, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air provide fixes for several unspecified issues affecting the stability of these computers.

The same models are also the subjects of SMC Firmware Updates to improve the sensing and accuracy of the MagSafe power adaptor indicator lights on all three models, and the battery charge indicator lights on the MacBook and 15in MacBook Pro.

As yet there have been few reports of problems with these updates. Every software update seems to bring a complaint from someone that it caused their system to malfunction in some way, but it's often a case of assuming post hoc ergo propter hoc (after this, therefore because of this).

In other words, the problem may already have been lying dormant, and only became apparent when a change was made by the just-applied update. If you run into such a situation, you don't really care about the niceties - you just want to know how to recover from it.

But the screams of anguish from such users can unnecessarily deter other people from installing what may be a significant update.

The updates are available via Apple's Support Downloads page and (presumably) via Software Update.
