Microsoft Office 2004 and 2008 updates do more than plug security holes

Opinion and Analysis

A Word formatting issue affecting documents saved in Word 97-2004 format and then opened in Word 2003 has been fixed.

There are no real changes to Entourage, just updated time zone information reflecting changes in certain locales.

The download is a honkin' great 104M because it incorporates all previous updates for Office 2008.

While it is a good idea to provide a single updater that will work with any previous version (it's especially handy if you support multiple computers or need to reinstall Office from scratch), those who make a point of keeping their software up to date would probably welcome the release of incremental updaters to reduce the effect on their download quotas.

Office 2004 11.5.3 delivers the same security patches as the 2008 update along with the time zone update for Entourage, but a smaller number of other changes as might be expected for a more mature product.

The remaining improvements are fixes for issues that could cause Word to quit when opening a document, or Excel to quit when opening or closing workbooks.

The Office 2004 11.5.2 update is a prerequisite for 11.5.3, which explains why the latter is a relatively svelte 15M.

And what of the Open XML File Format Converter, used to allow the use of Office 2007/2008-style Open XML documents with Office 2004? Version 1.0.2 has been released to address the same security issues as the latest updates to Office itself.
