Apple recently revised a support article that recommended the use of antivirus software on Macs - and now the article has been pulled completely! What's going on?
Late last month Apple revised its support article number HT2550 which read in part "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult."
But the URL for that page (
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2550) now generates a 'page not found' error.
Macworld
quoted an Apple spokesperson as saying that the article was "old and inaccurate" - despite it having been updated in the last week or two.
It seems Apple may have been embarrassed by the amount of attention the note received from prominent web sites including the
BBC.
That Apple spokesperson Macworld quoted went on to say "The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box."
A brave assertion. It might have been safer if he'd said "that
help provide protection", though he did add that "running anti-virus software may offer additional protection".
Indeed.
