Google Calendar makes a date with Mac's iCal

Opinion and Analysis

Users of Apple's iCal and Google Calendar can now enjoy the benefits of integrating the two programs.

iCal is the standard calendaring program that comes with Mac OS X, and Google Calendar is a popular web application for the same purpose.

But until now, there's been no official way of synchronising data between the two, although there was at least one third-party utility for the purpose.

Google now supports the CalDAV protocol, providing interoperability between the two calendaring applications. The open-source Sunbird is another desktop program that supports this protocol.

According to David Besbris, engineeering directors at Google, synchronisation between Google Calendar and iCal occurs "almost instantly".

To make the setup process easier, some developers at Google have provided Calaboration, a free utility that finds the user's Google Calendar calendars and allows their selection for synchronisation.

Google also provides Calendar synchronisation for Outlook, BlackBerry and Android. Apple's own software handles syncing between an iPhone and iCal.
