SmartErase drives reburn used optical media for security

Opinion and Analysis

According to Gakin Chang, marketing manager at PLDS, "users can rest assure that the private and sensitive data is securely erased and unable to recaptured."

We'll take his word for it for now, but doubtless those with an interest in security and access to relatively sophisticated equipment will put that claim to the test.

Still, it sounds like a very handy feature, and one that users would do well to make a routine part of their operations.

The three versions of the drive are the iHAP322 (PATA, $A59.95), iHAS322 (SATA, $A59.95) and iHAS422 (SATA, $A64.95). That extra $5 for the '422 model buys you the LightScribe disc labelling capability.

For comparison, the Lite-On iHAS220 20x DVD burner with LightScribe has a street price around $A45.

All three SmartErase drives are due to go on sale in Australia in mid-December.

Now Mr Chang, what about Mac OS X software support?
